“In Greek mythology, Hypnos is the gentle personification of sleep, while his son Morpheus reigns over the realm of dreams. The poppy, with its deep red petals and sedative properties—thanks to the naturally occurring opium—became an emblem of both deities. The ancient Greeks recognized that the poppy’s ability to induce sleep paralleled Hypnos’s own power to bring peaceful slumber, and its vivid, transient beauty evoked the fleeting, mutable nature of dreams that Morpheus so masterfully shaped.
